Every nation needs a legend.
"There are two events in German postwar history that people still remember exactly where they were on this day: the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and Germany's surprising victory at the football World Cup in 1954, better known as the Miracle of Bern. This victory has become a myth, its makers have become legends." - Director and ex-professional football player Sönke Wortmann.
Set in the summer of 1954, Das Wunder von Bern is the story of 11-year-old Matthias who lives in a German mining town with his mother, sister and brother. He is adopted as the bag carrier and lucky mascot for the local football team by top player Helmut Rahn. Meanwhile, after years in captivity, Matthias' father Richard returns from a Soviet PoW camp, only to cast a dark shadow over his once-happy family.
For Richard, football is pointless, and so is the World Cup that's about to be held in Bern, Switzerland. Matthias, however, longs to be there with his idol, who has been chosen to play on the German team. Through his passion for the game and his fighting spirit, Matthias rekindles a love of life in his dad's heart - and also 'helps' win the World Cup.
Winner of the Best Picture and Best Actor honours at the German Film Awards 2004, this film is an intensely emotional and touching family drama shot against the exhilarating, authentic background of West Germany's miraculous World Cup victory in 1954.
